Wednesday's Word - August 5, 2020
It was wonderful to wake to the sunlight and stillness this morning after Hurricane Isaisa past over last night. The whirling winds brought trees down and darkness to many and as I sat in the shimmer of candle light, I lifted prayers to God for all those in the darkness, all those working to restore light, and those still in harm's way. Even amidst the moving ground of Covid days, a storm can rush in and disturb the order we are so desperately clinging to hold onto and yet, there are surely more storms brewing on the horizon. So in the dark, I picked one of my favorites, "Help, Thanks, Wow" by Anne Lamott as I sought her words and prayer to comfort me.
"Prayer is our sometimes real selves trying to communicate with the Real, with Truth, with the Light. It is reaching out to be heard, hoping to be found by a light and warmth in the world, instead of darkness and cold, Light reveals us to ourselves, which is not always so great if you find yourself in a big disgusting mess, possibly of your own creation. But like sunflowers we return to light. Light warms, and in most cases it draws us to itself. And in this light, we can see beyond shadow and illusion to something beyond our modest receptors, to what is way beyond us, and deep inside."
This morning with the sun shining, I was struck by the freshly picked sunflowers ablaze on my neighbor's farm stand. A new day begins, hear our prayers, O God, help us on our way.
